๐ฌ๐ท Olympia and Delphi Recap ๐ฌ๐ท Wakefieldโs time in Santorini had swiftly come and gone, once again three amazing days feeling like four to five. Now was the time for the sojourners to see the southwest coast of the mainland. The crew boarded the charter bus and began their trek along the Gulf Coast.
There was a different feeling in the air. The backdrop of rugged mountain ranges meeting the calm, blue coastline bordered by the old beach towns cast a subdued veil over the drowsy travelers as they nodded in and out of sleep. Thirty minutes outside of Corinth, Nena came over the loudspeaker describing the history of the Corinth Canal. This historical infrastructure provided the only connection between the Peloponnese and Athens. Before its construction in 1893, merchants traveling from the Adriatic Sea had to sail around the southern coast of Greece to reach the Athens port, adding 200 miles to the route. A brief stop provided enough time for the group to take in the industrial monument.
The Ancient Theater of Epidaurus was next, one of the worldโs best-preserved amphitheaters boasting a capacity for 13,000 spectators, outstanding acoustics, and construction that, even by todayโs standards, is an impressive feat. Students took turns testing the acoustics, hollering from centerstage to their friends thirty-four rows above. Their walking shoes and cardio strength were tested as they roamed the massive venue, climbed the old stone staircase, and looked out at the spectacular views of the surrounding mountain range.
After an hour of touring, another opportunity for nap time presented itself as the group traversed their way to the ancient ruins of Mycenae. Nena informed us what makes this site so unique is its indelible ties to Homerโs famous works, the โIliadโ and the โOdyssey.โ Aditionally, the Mycenaeans played a major role in the industrial and cultural development of Eastern Greek civilization from the 15th to 12th century B.C., well known for dominating production and trade, and contributing a new writing system, Linear B.
The group crossed under the famous Lions Gate to come across a pack of wild...โผ๏ธClick the link in bio for the full storyโผ๏ธ
๐งฟ Santorini Recap ๐งฟ Two days had felt like three in Athens, and before they knew it, Nena was whisking the Wakefield journeyers off to their next adventure. The plane made a steep bank to the right and aligned with the small runway awaiting their arrival. The white-capped waves and sandy shoreline welcomed the passengers as they touched down in one of Greeceโs island gems, Santorini.
As soon as their feet hit the ground, the group was off to get in as much island time as possible. The charter bus wove through narrow village streets and switch-back roads lined with vineyards, white stucco construction, blue domes, and bright yellow fennel bushes. They were dropped off at the base of Mount Profitis Ilias and hiked to the highest lookout on the island, 1,860 feet above sea level. Students viewed the outside of its resident monastery and snapped photos of the beautiful scenery. From there, they made their way to the village of Pyrgos. The narrow alleyways hugged the trekkers, giving their first up-close look at the unique layout of a castle town. Nena explained the purpose of the tight-knit walkways and buildings was to slow down pirate attacks and provide protection to the residents and merchants. No vehicle would ever fit inside of Pyrgosโ winding pathways.
After an enchanting late lunch at Forty One, nestled on a black sand beach under a bungalow of tropical trees, the group checked into their stunning cliffside hotel, the Goulielmos Hotel. With waterfront views and breathtaking panoramas of the caldera, the travelers sat outside their rooms, absorbing it all in, acknowledging they were living an experience of a lifetime.
In typical tourist fashion, the wayfarers enjoyed another early-morning Greek breakfast the next day and traveled to their first stopโฆ โผ๏ธ Tap the link in bio for the full story โผ๏ธ
๐ฌ๐ท Athens Recap ๐ฌ๐ท Upon landing in Greece, Wakefield students were greeted by a Greek woman emanating the essence of a sage who had lived a thousand lives. Her name was Nena, and she was the designated historian for the duration of the trip. After boarding a charter bus, the group took in breathtaking views of the Grecian coast as they made their way to the Temple of Poseidon. Nena narrated their ride, telling the story behind the templeโs existence since the mid-fifth century B.C. Here, the group got their first look at the incredible marble architecture that is a hallmark of Greece. After touring, the group headed to the hotel for a good nightโs rest.
Dawn broke, and Dr. Miller knocked at each door, ensuring the groggy travelers were getting a move on. After breakfast, they headed to the ultimate Athens experience, the Acropolis. Weaving up a wide stone walkway, the group eventually stopped at their first amphitheater, the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, stretching below them on the southern slope. They continued through the Propylaea to the piรจce de rรฉsistance, the Temple of Athena Parthenos. A humble appreciation set in amongst the group for the incredible manpower it took to build such a site in such a time, while Nena articulated the depths of history that occurred at this architectural wonder.
Following this, the group set out to their next experience, a Greek cooking class. A warm welcome bellowed out of the entrance to a beautiful kitchen fully set for the students to immerse themselves in Greek cuisine. After two hours of preparation and laughter, the group reaped the benefits of their efforts, enjoying one of the best meals of the trip. Shuffling out of the kitchen, they headed to the Acropolis Museum.
A familiar icon, the Athenian owl, gave a Wakefield nod from the Greek Gods as they entered the museum. Towering above them were hand-carved marble statues demanding their admiration. At eye level were encased models displaying the phases of the Acropolis lifespan and how it once existed. Closing out their day, the group browsed the village marketplace called Plaka, and that night, they enjoyed an authentic dinner and danced at a local restaurant.

๐ One of the many great opportunities that Wakefield students get is access to the incredible Mr. Matt McDonough and his expertise in college counseling (2nd picture on the left). Recently, our Upper School was invited to attend a college fair hosted by @foxcroftschool where they perused all of the attending schools to discuss their options and whatโs available to them as they decide on their paths for undergrad. Mr. McDonough also takes the juniors on a college tour every year and works closely one-on-one in advising and assisting with their college application process. ๐

๐ Happy #EarthDay! In celebration, we are shining a light on the work of one of our new Upper School teachers, Mr. Charles Botwick. He has been at the forefront of environmental engineering and technology since 1973. To fortify his foundation for environmental expertise, he spent grad school learning from one of the most well-known ecologists, Mr. Howard T. Odum, who received the equivalent of the Nobel Prize for Ecology, the Crafoord Prize. He also studied under Dr. George Woodwell who proved the concept of biomagnification in the food chain.
Professionally, Mr. Botwick has worked many years as an environmental tech consultant advising the Pentagon and the White House, participating in a select Senate Environmental Committee, and consulting over 150 environmental engineering and tech companies. He was a consultant for FEMA, where he wrote the protocols for handling toxic hazardous waste after disasters. This opportunity arose in 2001 when he served on a task force mitigating the environmental consequences of the Houston Medical Center flooding which was one of the biggest medical waste disasters in US history.
Fortunately for Wakefield students, Mr. Botwick has brought his wealth of knowledge and experience to our Upper School. Local ecology students have been tracking their personal use of plastics and applying that observation to gain perspective on local and global use of plastics. They also investigate recent news reports to analyze their environmental impact on society and discuss these impacts as a class. Mr. Botwick holds class discussions on the carbon footprint of food production, the use of solar power to improve agricultural practices, and current news surrounding the impact of PFAS contaminants. To bring the professional world of environmental policy to the classroom, he held a mock global climate change conference where students had to identify with a country of their choice and debate their renewable energy needs.
Mr. Botwickโs class is an excellent example of student agency in action, allowing them to discover how โeverything is everywhere connected,โ through student-directed research and discovery, guided by his expert oversight. ๐
๐ In an ongoing effort to promote civic education in the Social Studies department, students in AP US History welcomed a Wakefield parent, Mrs. Diana Corona, to campus to hear of her upbringing behind the "Iron Curtain" living in Romania during the Cold War. She answered student questions for nearly an hour, sharing stories of daily hardships and fears of the secret police, the positive impact of her father, her journey to the United States, and the challenges and triumphs associated with building a successful global technology company here in Northern Virginia.
One memorable moment from the discussion was when Mrs. Corona shared some words of wisdom about growing up today. Because the world is increasingly interconnected and global, her advice would be to travel as much as possible. She encouraged students to go see the world so that they can learn about other cultures and better understand their own culture. We are very grateful for Mrs. Corona's willingness to share her experiences with us! ๐

๐ฃ๏ธ Upper School history teacher, Mr. Peter Findler is on a roll! This past Monday he was presented with the Tom and Betty Lawrence History Teacher of the Year Award. It was established in 2006 to honor the most outstanding United States history teacher in the nation. Mr. Findler has won the Virginia State Award and advanced to the national competition.
The title of his essay is โRevolutionary Resilience.โ
In the essay, Mr. Findler writes about how the colonists faced immense difficulties at the 1777-1778 winter encampment at Valley Forge but overcame them and emerged stronger than before due to the courage of the soldiers and the leadership of George Washington and his generals. His great-grandfatherโs great-grandfather was one of those generals, tasked with carrying out training and discipline of the troops. His name was Maj. Gen. Peter Gabriel Muhlenberg.
Mr. Findler believes that it is important to teach this story to young people because it is a demonstration of how individuals can overcome challenges through seeking a sense of belonging with others. Due to the strict discipline enforced equally among the troops, they were able to form bonds that would lead to great victories and lasting relationships long into the future. Moreover, it is because of their shared challenges that they were able to find a common sense of identity and emerge stronger than they were before their difficult experience at Valley Forge.
Furthermore, his nonprofit @the957project was just awarded $25k from the PenFed Foundation Military Heroes Grant. The funds will go towards supporting five Virginia schools as they implement Operation CREST, their after-school program that connects high school students with veterans who share their experiences as it relates to courage, resilience, empowerment, service, and teamwork.
A huge round of applause for Mr. Findler! We couldnโt be more proud to have you on faculty at Wakefield!! ๐ฆ

๐ For International Womenโs Day, we celebrate our dedicated Head of School, Ashley Harper. Mrs. Harperโs unwavering commitment to the community of Wakefield School shows in her consistent appearances at our student events, her close relations with Wakefield families, and her strategic oversight of all school operations.
Most recently, she was appointed to the board of directors for the Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS). As a chapter of the National Association of Independent Schools, VAIS is a recognized accreditation body for independent schools by the Virginia Board of Education, with 94 member schools. It is without a doubt that Mrs. Harper's three decades of PK-12 independent school experience in classroom, divisional, and advancement roles have earned her this achievement.
This appointment comes after six years of collaborative headship, leading the drive to make Wakefield a school for student-centered academic experience. Under her direction, Wakefield has expanded opportunities for student agency and independent studies. Her leadership culminated in the recent unveiling of the reimagined Wakefield brand and mission: To foster the character, curiosity, and clear voices the world will always need.
Please join us in celebrating Mrs. Harper for her astute leadership, representing an excellent example of what is possible for ambitious women everywhere. ๐ฆ

๐ ๏ธ Since the times of the ancient Greeks and Romans, the term โliberal artsโ has referred to the fields of study necessary for an individual to participate fully in citizenship. Naturally then, what comprises the liberal arts continues to develop over time as our world grows in breadth and complexity. This course is for students with little or no experience in technical theatre. In it, students learn an introduction to the history of theatre, the basics of the theatrical production process, including roles of the production process, basics of tool use and scene shop safety, introduction to carpentry and stagecraft, basics of stage lighting, sound and costume/wardrobe, and fundamentals of working on stage crew.
When an audience watches a piece of theatre, they rarely understand what goes on behind the scenes or know the people who work to make the production look its best. This course is an exploration of that world behind the scenes. ๐ ๏ธ

๐งช Curiosity is the driver of progress which is why this distinguished characteristic is a pillar of our mission. In this reel, Middle School students in physical science played โchemical detectiveโ, looking for the signs that a chemical change is taking place. ๐ข A Wakefield education extends far beyond textbooks and exams. Itโs about self-discovery and a deep connection to the world around us. Some of our Upper School Wakefield students are a part of the Mola Mola Club led by Dr. Miller. The club members held a fundraiser to raise money for the conservation of green sea turtles in the Galapagos in addition to providing educational opportunities for students of the Galapagos to further their environmental science education. In this effort, students learned how they can directly influence global conservation initiatives while pouring their time into a subject matter they feel passionate about. ๐ข #wfs #molamolaclub #wildlifeconservation #savetheturtles #characterdevelopment #givingback #northernvirginia #independentschool #privateschool
๐ค In keeping with the trends of today's educational landscape, STEM learning is an option for interested students. As a part of our robotics class, our middle schoolers are presented with a challenge each week in which they have to collaborate as a team and find a viable solution. For the "Up and Over Challenge," students engineered a robot fully equipped with a mechanical arm capable of moving blocks from one place to another. The variables they had to consider were weight, torque, motion, and speed, as this challenge was a timed trial. Our young budding engineers develop critical thinking skills as they tackle each challenge with enthusiasm and tenacity. ๐ค

โค๏ธ Thanks to Wakefield Schoolโs continued commitment to community outreach and service, local families in need woke up with Christmas gifts under their tree this morning.
Wakefield School is proud to continue our relationship with the @windyhillfoundation in providing holiday gifts for their resident children in need.

Thank you to those who participated and raised money in our recent Turkey Trot at Thanksgiving. The funds raised in that event supported this outreach project.
Additionally, we would like to thank our partner in this effort, Teneo, for providing Wakefield with half of the gifts donated to the children. We are grateful for their demonstration of selflessness and generosity! โค๏ธ

๐ฃ๏ธ Six students (Piper, Alexandra, Emily, Natalie, Emmett, and Hugh) and Mrs. Handford traveled to Richmond this weekend to compete in the National High School Ethics Bowl, a program that promotes respectful, supportive, and in-depth discussion of ethics among high school students nationwide.
Ethics Bowl fosters constructive dialogue and furthers the next generationโs ability to make sound ethical decisions. The Wakefield team held their own in competition, making it to the third round, and winning an important case against book censorship. The team worked for the last two months to prepare for the sixteen cases and presented themselves with poise, acknowledging all sides of an argument, and putting forth sound arguments that supported their positions.
According to Mrs. Handford, "In a world as polarized as ours, it was heartening to see students practice and build the virtues central to democratic citizenship. All of the students navigated difficult questions with an open mind and respect." Well done, Wakefield! ๐ฆ๐๐ผ

๐The Geometry students have been studying chapter three which involves lines and transversals. With a wealth of new vocabulary such as corresponding angles, alternate exterior angles, alternate interior angles, and same-side interior angles, students were tasked to create a town with three parallel lines and two non-parallel cross streets. This is a unique project that allows students to use the knowledge they have learned and apply it to a practical map of a town where specific structures (ie, grocery store, post office, courthouse, etc) need to be in certain places according to the angles that were studied in class. Before placing their town on the poster board, students are asked to have their draft plans reviewed by a classmate. Students spend roughly five hours of class time working through the logistics of the town before placing it, creatively, on their poster board. ๐

๐งกโค๏ธ Happy Thanksgiving from our family to yours!! Special thanks to all those who made our annual Friendsgiving a wonderful celebration to remember. ๐งกโค๏ธ
๐ฆMr. Carterโs 8th grade Composition class is working on a mini model of our Junior and Senior Thesis project. The goal of this research paper is to help our students becomed skilled at the writing and research process early on.
The prompt Mr. Carter has provided his class is as follows: Communities must work together to respond to the challenges of a changing world in order to prepare for the future. Some students shared what they chose for their research questions.
๐ง Why is conducting research of another planet, such as Mars, more important than trying to save our own?
๐ง What is the history of biological warfare and how should our communities respond to it?
๐ง How does autism affect the emotional development of children and how can we help it?
At Wakefield, our standards for education are intended to prepare students for their future. As we know, a good portion of under and post-graduate education is centered around the art of research and writing. This is precisely why we require our students to grasp this process from an early age. Furthermore, the process encourages deep learning and critical thinking, as well as cross-curricular understanding.
Showing our students the advantages of taking ownership of their education and igniting their own personal voice is what makes Wakefield stand out amongst independent schools in our area. Just ask our graduates who are now excelling in their college experiences. Most of them credit Wakefield with the thorough preparation for the rigorous requirements of a college education. ๐ฆ

๐บ๐ธ Yesterday, we welcomed Sergeant First Class Kim Harrell (mom to Coach Chisman) and Lieutenant Colonel Aaron Teller (father of Scarlett and Kenley) to speak about their experiences as military veterans.
Both speakers reminisced on the experiences they shared with their military brothers and sisters, the challenges they had to overcome, and the rewards they received for their sacrifice. Themes of humility, selflessness, community, relationships, mentorship, finding ways to serve, and the benefits of serving were common threads throughout both presentations.
Volunteers were chosen from the student body and tasked with using Lieutenant Colonel Tellerโs robot to complete a mission using a stuffed owl, which proved to be easier said than done. Under normal circumstances, the robot is used to extract and dispose of explosives. You could feel the enthusiasm buzzing in the room as the students clamored to get called on during the Q&A.
Overall, it was a wonderful visit from two military heroes who inspired our school just by simply telling their stories. We are eternally grateful for their service and honor their sacrifice with deep reverence. ๐บ๐ธ

The spotlight is on #WorldKindnessDay today, but at Wakefield, we emphasize this important attribute every day. Through our courtesies program and cross-grade level relationships, instilling good character in all of our students is at the forefront of our mission: Fostering the character, curiosity, and clear voices the world will always need.
Kindness is often demonstrated in how our students stand in respect of an incoming visitor to their classrooms, how they hold the door open for each other in between classes, or when our fifth-grade honor guards assist the younger students to their classrooms in the morning from the drop-off line. Pictured are two students working together to build tricycle bikes for the Junior Kindergarten and Kindergarten classes to play with on their recess breaks.
At Wakefield, kindness is celebrated every day!
