Whether Mr. Martin is inspiring students to scrutinize and interpret the significance of repeated images and words in a literary work or helping students to develop and strengthen their command of rhetorical and stylistic devices, his teaching is an invitation to encounter language, not as a window to our world but as the instrument we employ to think about, define, and understand said wor(l)d. When he is not challenging the sophomores to navigate the complexities of an argument or to become more artful and intentional in their written expression, he can be found swinging a tennis racquet, selling used books, writing raps, making bold claims about the incomparable genius of David Foster Wallace or Eminem or Dave Chapelle, or doing yet another voice impression of someone you just might happen to know.
